The Specify Canada specification package provides specification language that enables project teams to incorporate Canadian steel procurement requirements into construction documents. Developed for architects, engineers, owners, and specification writers, the package supports Buy Canadian procurement objectives while integrating seamlessly into established specification-writing practices. Although primarily developed to support compliance with the federal Policy on Prioritizing Canadian Materials in Federal Procurements and the Standard on Embodied Carbon in Construction, the language can be adapted for use on a wide range of public and private sector projects seeking to incorporate Canadian steel requirements.
The package is intended to complement existing project specifications. Users should review the applicable clauses, copy them into the appropriate MasterFormat®/National Master Specification (NMS) master sections, and modify the language as required to suit the project’s scope, procurement strategy, and contractual requirements. By leveraging existing specification frameworks, project teams can efficiently incorporate Canadian steel sourcing requirements while maintaining consistency with established specification-writing practices.
Getting Started
The Division 01 document (01 61 33 – Canadian Steel Procurement Procedures) serves as the master specification for the Specify Canada package. It contains the core procurement, verification, and embodied carbon requirements. All other specification inserts are intended to reference and work in conjunction with this master document and should be incorporated into the applicable MasterFormat®/NMS technical sections.
